The Town of Carthage is a fast-growing community with a population of 3,128. Carthage is a historic town established in 1796 and is the county seat of Moore County. Carthage is bordered to the south by Pinehurst, home of The World Golf Hall of Fame, to the east by Fort Bragg, home of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and to the west by the scenic Uwharrie National Forest. The Carthage Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Officer.
The pay range starts at $49,373 and ends at $74,060. The pay range listed is the minimum and maximum for this position. N.C. BLET certified candidates’ hire rate is $49,373 and will increase to $51,842 after completion of 6-month probationary period. N.C. lateral transfers or out-of-state candidates with experience will receive offers commensurate with the skills, experience and education of the candidate. Additionally, the Town of Carthage offers a highly competitive benefits package and incentives to include the following:
- Take home car up to 30-mile radius from town limits.
- Additional NC certification and education pay incentives: NC general certificate (2.5%), NC intermediate certificate (5%), NC advanced certificate (5%), associate’s degree (2.5%), bachelor’s degree (5%), master’s degree (7.5%).
- Holiday pay: Employees receive separate checks in June and December for every holiday they were employed for the year.

Police Cadet Program
The Carthage Police Department offers a Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Cadet Program where individuals can get paid by the department to attend the police academy. The program is designed to help interested individuals become certified North Carolina law enforcement officers by removing the financial burden of attending the academy.
- Applicants must be at least 20 years old at start of academy.
- Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation, have no felony convictions and have a clean driving record.
- Applicants are required to complete interviews and pass initial eligibility testing to ensure they are a good fit for the department.
- Upon successful completion of background checks, physical, drug screen, psychological exam and oral interviews, the applicant will be hired and employed as a police cadet and will attend the basic academy coursework at a local community college.
- During the course of the academy, the police cadet will be compensated with an abbreviated salary of $42,650.
- Upon successful completion and graduation from the basic academy, the police cadet will then advance to police officer and receive a salary increase to $49,373 (plus degree incentive and holiday pay).
- Upon graduation, employees are eligible to enroll in all town offered health benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:
United States Citizen, at least twenty (20) years of age; graduation from an accredited high school or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) with a college degree(s) preferred; licensed driver in North Carolina or able to obtain a North Carolina driver license within thirty (30) days of appointment; possess some knowledge of law enforcement operations and responsibilities; successful completion or in the process of successfully completing the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) required by the State of North Carolina before probationary status ends; certified in North Carolina as a police officer or able to obtain North Carolina police officer certification; no felony convictions.
Special Requirements:
Successful completion of the Field Training Program administered by the Carthage Police Department.
